NEWSLETTER 3 - October 2006
It's already October? Hum. I seem to have missed the September newsletter. Sorry about that. The only thing I would have said though is: Happy Birthday to me! And that's pretty boring. So let's move on.

NEWS ITEMS
Launched Black and Orange
Most years (I'm hesitant to say "every" year because that's too much commitment) I host some sort of Halloween contest. Just a fun little thing that people can participate in and enjoy creating in the month of October. And this year is no exception. This year the contest is called "Black & Orange: a Creative Halloween Contest and Collaborative Gallery"... or just "Black & Orange" if you'd like to have extra time for coffee. The idea is that participants can create anything they want (illustration, fine art, photograph, craft, etc) as long as the primary palette is black and orange (Are you getting why I called it that yet?) :) So, check it out. The submissions so far are amazing!

Moved South
Penelope Illustration has officially moved south. On September 9th we moved in to a temporary (well, hopefully, the house up north is still not sold) apartment in South Carolina. (See the new, not even close to being improved studio here... like I said, it's temporary-ish). There seem to be a lot of little pockets of goodness hidden to the passerby. Places called "The Red Tub" and other places that sell 50 cent tacos (can't beat that!). We also stumbled upon live bluegrass music behind a burrito restaurant where I drummed on a concrete wall with a little blonde girl with green antennas. This is the stuff inspiration is made of, friends.

CLIENT WORK
Riggs Advertising
Riggs does this really cool thing once a year called "CreatAthon" where they take on a dozen or so not-for-profits that could use some help and they stay up all night working on campaigns for them. This year they asked me to contribute an illustration and I gladly did. The campaign I worked on was a group that serves homeless families. Needy families sign up for this two-year program where they are given a home and taught to be self-sufficient. They are counseled and take courses in skill development… shown how to get jobs, education and childcare. Basically, they are given their lives back. So the idea of the program is to fight homelessness in a long-term manner… not just crisis management. See the illustration here.

Baltimore Sun
I love getting across complicated ideas in a quick visual way. If I can accomplish that, I feel like the illustration is doing its job. Last month the Baltimore Sun ran a story on a woman who got braces when she was thirty years old. So, to get that across to the reader before they dove into the story, I drew her braces forming the timeline of her life. See the full illo here.

Seattle Met
I did a piece for the Seattle Met about who's hooking up with who on Grey's Anatomy. I don't watch that show, but I love the season two soundtrack... See the illo here.

GOINGS ON
Dial in Style
Just for designers (well, for anyone really, but shhh...), my rep, Scott Hull Associates, recently launched a neato little thing called Dial in Style. There were thousands of physical Dial in Style wheels sent out to help designers know what to call each style and to help them pick an appropriate illustrator for their project, but you can see a quick online version here. Apparently I am Defracted, Painterly, and Patterned. Who knew.

Word out. Thanks for reading!
