2 - August 2006
Happy Anniversary to Penelope Illustration! Today, August
16th 2006, is my second business anniversary. The last
two years have flown by... I think that's what happens
when you are doing what you are supposed to be doing.
Doors open and your path seems a little wider. That has
been my experience thus far... Let's hope the trend continues.
I am so grateful for the last year as it was far better
than the first. The first year I struggled quite a bit.
Fell a lot and picked myself up. Growing pains, let's
call them. This second year has been easier. I think it's
because I've learned how to cope with the valleys a little
more. There is less panic when things go awry and more
gratitude when things are good. I think experience and
finally getting into a groove where I know what I am doing
and how I get there also helps quite a bit. Love that
groove...
Not quite a year ago I set some goals. Typed them out
on a piece of paper, tucked it in my journal and forgot
about them. But in the back of my mind they were there
and I was always working toward them. I think the act
of putting it down on paper helped them come to be. (They
are on the top left.) The only one I have not achieved
is #3 - Get into Print Illustration Annual. I'm still
working on that one.
But the rest of them have been checked off... I was the
Fresh Feature in CA's
last Illustration Annual (!); I got into
Society
of Illustrators LA (not to mention 3x3
and Lurzer's
Archive); had a handful of successful shows;
got illustrations in some cool publications like LA
Times, Baltimore
Sun, Yoga
Journal, and Runner's
World; have steady work (meaning... it ebbs
and flows and I'm finally okay with that); relaunched
a revised Illustration
Friday site a few months ago; and I am doing
projects
to help keep me loose. Whew! I feel proud
of my hard work. And exhausted just writing about it.
:)
I guess the time has come to set new goals for the upcoming
year... Click on the "Goals" image on the left
to see them. Let those doors swing open.
Onto what's new this month:
CLIENT
WORK
Chase Bank/ NY Times
The piece for Chase Bank that I mentioned in my previous
newsletter ran in the New York Times August 1st. Center
spread in NYC. It was big (in size, I mean)... See pic
at left. It was definitely noticeable!
Baltimore Sun
As mentioned in the last newsletter, I do a weekly Balt
Sun piece for their Real Life column on Sunday. The one
from last month that I like quite a bit was for a story
about a woman who recalls her aunt Aida Zia and how she
like to clean her patio in Italy. I played with a slightly
different color palette for me and totally got hooked.

Stereos in Decline
I was recently approached by a local musician to do an
album cover for his newest collection of songs. He allowed
me free reign over the creative, so I had fun playing
with different interpretations of the name of the album.
Here's the ultimate result. He was happy
with it. So was I. Coolio.
GOINGS
ON
Moving South
Those of you that read my blog
already know... My husband and I have decided to move
to South Carolina to be closer to my brother and his wife,
who was diagnosed with stage four cancer a few months
ago. So in less than four weeks I pack up the studio (not
to mention the house) and haul it all down south to cram
it into a temporary apartment. I'm so excited to explore
a new city and maybe meet some new local clients (hello
columbians!).
New source of fuel for creativity.
Also, if you know of anyone who wants to buy a cutie 2
bedroom house in Indianapolis, we gotta sell quick. If
you don't know of anyone, please send out good vibes that
we find a buyer fast. I would really appreciate it!
The End. I gotta start
packing!
