Portland Monthly, “Mortified”
August 23, 2008Mortified is an event where people (comedians, actors, regular folk) get up on stage and read something they wrote when they were embarrassingly young… teenage angst stories of the first awkward kiss, the note written to the bully, worst prom, etc.
Portland Monthly was doing a story on this cultural phenomenon and called me in to illustrate it. We worked together to come up with the illustration below: a man on stage with this teenage dorky self in his palm, talking into the microphone. The art director loved it and I think it was a nice final too. :)

your illustration prompted a poem-in-progress - to address the person who tormented me in the eighth grade. the guy died recently but i was able to talk to him some months ago when his mother passed away. so strange to have these things to keep surfacing after 40+ years. some things you don’t really ever get over. keep up your good work and i’ll try to do the same. best regards.
