simplifying the season
November 26, 2007My Sacred Life, Day 14
Holiday madness. I want nothing to do with you.
Instead I want to take it s…l…o…w….
I want to sip.
I want to savor.
* * * * *
crafting? crafting - To start the holiday season Colin and I tackled a craft project. Unheard of in our household. We are not crafters… I love crafts but they seem way out of my reach. (but I’ve been challenging myself with trying new things and exploding self-perceptions so I did it anyway). A pine cone garland for our doorway. (Pro-crafters, please don’t laugh. I am proud of how this simple task turned out, and have the pine cone scars to prove it — little red dots all over my hands. hee. Gloves would have been smart in retrospect.)

family and friends - Thanksgiving was spent at Tom and Alison’s house. It was perfect. Alison knows how to make things beautiful. Simple red leaves on white napkins. Perfect place-settings. Fall-scented candles on the tables. It was a mix of family and friends. It was relaxed. Everyone sitting around telling stories. Savoring the good food. Pitching in to cook and clean.

thanksgiving art - While the dishes were being done, I took care of distracting the girls. (Ali’s friend Kimberly has 4 year old twins who are just adorable!) We went out to the garage and painted… I love what they created. And always learn so much from doing art with kids.
* * * * *
And of course - there was a fire.

resting - And then I got sick. Felt like my head was a balloon trailing behind me as I moved through the room. So we went home early and I slept for two days. Unable to fight it. Felt so good to just be cuddled up warm under blankets and sleep (with the help of our two cats, who thanked me for finally joining in their reindeer games). Rest.
Welcome holiday.

What a beautiful way to bring in the holidays. Minus the sickness, but sounds like that gave you some rest.
And your crafting…I love it! What a treat to see that every time you walk through the door.

Apart from the last pic. it all sounds like you had a lovely time, especially the painting with kids and bonfire experience! Great looking porch+garland!

Chookooloonks: We made the garland by gathering 2 five-gallon buckets full of pine cones from the woods. Then wrapped the tops with strings of twine, hiding the string under the scales of the pine cones. Then we hung up a very long piece of twine around the door and simple started hanging the pine cones from it in clusters… varying lengths of twine to get it to look right.
In retrospect, fishing line might have been simpler because you wouldn’t have to hide it. :)

Hey, I like your pinecone garland! It’s very simply and festive. Perfect! Sounds like you had a really good holiday with your family, too. :)
