XLNT

I am sitting here at my desk which has been moved into the dining room (disassembled the dining room table to make room)… one dog and one cat are at my feet, so my chair is pushed back so I have room for my legs. It’s a tight spot… but they seem so content, so I won’t shoo them.

I started out with my “studio” in the second bedroom, but moved it because it turned into more of a storage unit (we haven’t unpacked anything we don’t need) and the kitty litter is in there… and yeah… no… I’m not going to be in there with litter box scents, lovely as they are.

Then I moved my “studio” into the corner of the main bedroom. It only took a few weeks for me to get tired of working behind the door. Squished and crammed. And the bedroom was always wrecked which didn’t do much for my ability to sleep. (They say you should separate your work space from your sleep space and now I see why.)

So now it’s the dining room in the middle of the apartment. Feels exposed and crammed, a wonderful combo. My computer, scanner, printer, lamp and various papers and sketches strewn about my tiny desk. And it all spills onto my painting table which has a work space about the size of a postage stamp.

I wonder if Colin is getting the hint that I am slowly moving toward the front door. Soon I supposed I’ll be working in the car. That may have more space. :)

I am SO ready to find a house. But know that desperation is no way to enter into a search for the place where you’ll be for an indeterminable number of years. So I am trying to be patient. And trying to get out as frequently as I can so I don’t get a worsened case of cabin fever.

This too shall pass. But I am ready NOW!

I have a friend who sold her house in 5 days, moved across the country and bought a house with a 2 day search. I am still seething with jealousy! (How did you do that, T?)

We’ve looked at a lot of houses so far, but none of them are “the one”. None have that vibe where you can walk in and feel your insides belt out: THIS IS IT! Our needs and criteria are high, but I feel like it’s out there waiting for us. We just have to keep looking… and waiting for spring, when more houses go on the market. Till then, crammed dining room workspace it is.

(The picture above has nothing to do with anything… I just liked that she’s saying “XLNT” with that funny smile. But maybe it does fit with this post in a way…)

    Hi Penelope,

When my husband and I were looking at houses, we had the same problem. But don’t
give up! We had a VERY short time (2 months) to find a house since we both
had given notice on a house he was renting and an apartment for me a my
    2 girlfriends. And yes,
all of us were going to move in together until my girlfriends could afford a
place of their own. Talk about pressure! The house we ended up buying was not
our dream home, at first. The woman who owned it was crazy, when we
went to look at it she wouldn’t let us and the realtor in and at closing almost
didn’t sell it to us. But I saw the potential and after a few years and lots
of remodeling to bring it from the early 70’s to today, I love it. So, don’t give
up it may be right in front of you :)

DETERMINATION. That’s how we found a house in 2 days. I knew the alternative was
living in an extended stay hotel WITHOUT my dog. When we moved to Raleigh we were
without him for 3 weeks and it killed me. Not to mention the dinky 2 room palace
Matt & I shared with both of our computers. ;) You’ll find it! And when you do,
don’t wait to write that offer!

it sounds to me like you need a art studio outside of the home. I always looked for two bedroom apts or houses so I can live and work until I rented a very cheep studio apartment and was faced with the same dilemma that you are talking about cramped space. so I found an artist studio and moved all my paints and stuff in there. it gave me the feeling of going to work, took away all the distractions that lurked at home and put me in a working mood. I found that it was actually cheeper to run a studio and my living space than try to squeeze it all in in one place. I am sure there are spaces there in South Carolina you just have to seek them out. I promise you will be 200% happier.

Good luck and keep up the good work your stuff rocks.

    your friend Jared

Good luck with the househunting. Waiting is wise and in the end, will be worth it! In the meantime, you’re creating a Remember When? story for the two of you. :)
