working like crazy…

15portraits.jpg

It’s been quiet here on the blogfront, huh. I’ve been so busy working lately that I haven’t been online much (save for uploading new images to the Black and Orange contest). I am planning on going on a little road trip with my brother starting the middle of next week, so I’ve been cramming all my work into this week and a half. (I’m tired!) That’s where all those above portraits came from. The local alterntative newspaper back in Indianapolis asked me to illustrate 15 different portraits for their holiday gift guide. It’s supposed to be a little tongue-in-cheek with descriptions like:

1. The 30-something cousin who still lives in your aunt and uncle’s basement
2. The anti-war, vegan, feminist, PETA supporting, lesbian sister-in-law
3, The pothead step-brother
4. The comic-book collector cousin
5. Your Mom’s third husband, who just happens to be Black
6. Your dad’s new lover Tom
7. The teenage goth niece or nephew
8. The newborn or toddler niece or nephew
9. The academic uncle who is in expert in some obscure literary field
10. The aunt who just happens to be a rich snobby housewife
11. The cousin everyone in the family considers “the artsy one”
12. The one Republican you know who also happens to be your grandfather
13. The family dog and/or cat
14. Mom
15. Dad

Can you guess who is who?

I hope you all have a good weekend! xo

Wow, they are all brilliant. I’m still not sure which one the girl with the cool hat is but I do LOVE that hat. :o)

This is great! I want to make a card game out of it. What medium are they done in?
You deserve a road trip after this… I hope it is for fun :-)

I love them all - and especially the academic uncle. I’m in an English/Lit. program, and I actually have a professor who looks JUST like that!

Like Lorna, I couldn’t figure out that first girl with the funky hat. Great work!

Thanks guys! The one in question, with the purple bear hat is “The cousin everyone in the family considers “the artsy one””.

I actually have a hat like that (where I got the idea), but mine is blue. :)

Nice portraits. So… third husband who happens to be black. This must be a very whiteefied publication. Anyhoo, awesome, hilarious portraits.

I recognise someone in there but i doubt it is them… or maybe it is

Hi Penelope: I regularly read your blog and love your pictures, but have never written before. And I sorry to say I am finally prompted to write with a negative comment, but I want to comment on your portrait assignment. I realize that the paper probably gave you those categories…but to assume the audience is white is offensive. And to assume all the people who are related by blood or association are white, except for the third husband who “happens to be black” is also ridiculous. Why is no one else’s race mentioned, and when it’s not mentioned every person is assumed to be white? If I were you, I would question this “point of view” to your client, and also reconsider how you choose to illustrate it. I don’t think a picture has to be diverse just to cater to some PC notions, but again, to assume the audience is white, is a truly offensive and narrow view. Respectfully, Susan

Point taken, Susan. I tried to mix it up a little bit with the guy in the green turtle neck and the guy with the goatee. Maybe that didn’t come across strongly enough.

With a life time of drawing behind me…I sometimes look back at my drawings and wonder why all the people are white too…
