Illustration Friday: Run

August 28, 2006

hurricanewalk.jpg

This piece was created for a story that ran in the Baltimore Sun. The author recalls Hurricane Hazel of 1954. She was a little girl when the hurricane hit and had to run home from school when the weather got bad enough for the nuns to dismiss them. She ran the mile to her home with her small sister and an umbrella that turned inside out from the strong wind. I thought this story was just ripe with imagery… I liked the idea of a sunny yellow rain coat against the gray green that comes with horrible weather.

For Illustration Friday’s topic: run.

Great illustration! It reminds me of the cover of a book I had as a child. I can’t for the life of me remember what the book was about or even the title… but I do remember the cover and this reminds me so much of it! I like feeling those little bits of unexpected nostalgia. I really like the pattern that is created by the “wind”…. bravo!

Lovely Penelope! I feel like I’m right there! Great choice of colors. It works perfectly! Hope you are well. My thoughts and positive energy go out to you and your family during this trying time. Here’s a quote that I found that made me think of your situation:

“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”
    Will Rogers

I know it’s hard to get up and go when things seem to be going right, but I think the move will turn out to be a wonderful experience for you.

This is a terrific image, Penelope! It’s so perfect for the newspaper story, too. Can’t you just see it in a children’s book?
