This reminds me of my figure drawing teacher's mantras, "Draw what you SEE, not what you KNOW" and "Drawing is forgetting the name of the thing one sees." I actually noticed the phenomenon he's describing - the translation of the world into lines and shapes, which your eye then translates back into the world - the other day when I was making a drawing.
