color my bobble-head imagination
I just finished a whole bunch of colorful backgrounds for a book I’m working on… They are all around me on the floor and my eyes play games with the colors and patterns… those two could make a good looking watermelon. I wonder where that leaf path leads. Green coffee beans. A magenta water park slide maybe. Pop the orange bubbles as they pass by.
I got my hair chopped off this morning. I brought in a picture to the lady and of course, it looks nothing like it. Dammit. And she made it HUGE. Like… four times the size of my head. Bobble head lope. So all day long I’ve been pushing it down and it’s not working. Ah well. Hair is dumb.
And lastly… I am launching a new Halloween contest this week… by Thursday at the latest. I’m SO excited about it… I think it will be wonderful when it’s all said and done. I do hope you’ll participate! …Stay tuned!

I am super excited about the contest! These backgrounds are sooo cute!
Sorry about the haircut. I hope you are doing well. You are in my thoughts!
Awwwww… I was just thinking of chopping off my own locks and now I’m feeling a little dissuaded! I even had the same idea of taking a photo to the salon!!
Anyhow, I’m sure it’s not that bad…
And, if all else fails, it will tame itself eventually, and then grow back…!
I love the backgrounds – they look like scrapbook paper. I’d totally use them in my scrapbook! :)
It’s the curse of the weather woman hair. Without fail, every time I go to the ahirdressers to get my hair cut, I end up looking like Mary Sue Kazcmarek here to deliver you tonight’s chance of rain.
Bobble Head Lopie, that’s hilarious. You need to “mash” it down!
Use “pomade” to weigh the hair down until it grows enough that it stays down on its own. You can get it at the drug store. I rec the company called “Bed Head.”
And remember, hair always looks better after you’ve washed it and slept on it. ;o)
How weird- I was just working on exactly the same stuff- pages of boxes of textures and patterns. Perhaps these things zoom around the ether going in one head and then dancing off into someone elses. Yours are delicious!
Hope your hair calms itself down- hair usually gets a little too excited when it has first been lopped so I’m sure it’ll behave tomorrow.
hmmm….texas big hair. gotta love that!
everytime i get my hair done, i go home – rewash
it/restyle it. when people ask who styles my
hair, i want to say the house of kelly. the
cut is done by brandy, but the style is by
kelly. my stylist is a great friend and she
cuts it, then i sit in the chair and style
it. she knows that is the only way i will
leave!
happy wednesday, oh and great backgrounds!
beautiful blog and more importantly beautiful artwork. i enjoy being inspired by your work! and i agree with using pomade…i have a frizzball on my head and it def. is the best way to tame the wild beast! cheers
HOORAY FOR HALLOWEEN STUFF!!!! Sorry about the hairdo- i hate it when they do that. My hairdresser is good…I’ve been going to him for years and trust him…but sometimes he’ll have a “moment” and do something weird like make it really big or cut too many layers in it so then I look like a fluffy dog.
I feel your pain. I got my hair cut last week and didn’t find out until AFTER
she had started cutting that she was actually a realtor, just filling time
until she had enough transactions under her belt to do that fulltime. sigh.
And I didn’t notice it at the time or I would have had her fix it, but it’s
totally lopsided. I mean seriously an inch longer on one side then the other.
I haven’t had a decent hair cut since the 80’s. ha ha You’re absolutely
right, hair IS dumb.
Welcome to South Carolina…home of B I G Hair. Just kidding. I hate big hair. I actually thought of lopping my hair off too. My best friend owns a salon but even she hasn’t cut her own hair off drastically in eons. It’s as long as mine is – way down her back. I kind of like pulling back the pony tail on the weekends and twisting it up with a clip or barette to go out and I like the way the pony tail sticks out of my motorbike helmet so everyone knows I’m a girl when I pass them! I’m afraid of the bobble head look, too! Love the patterns and yum colors – like sherbet.
Take care! The hair will grow out.

beautiful background patterns — are they all traditional materials, all digital, or a combo? Luscious colors. Thanks for sharing them!
Traditional materials. And then I scanned them to adjust the colors to be a bit brighter… :)
I love the colorful backgrounds and I agree, hair is DUMB. ;)
I love the backgrounds, they are beautiful. Can I ask a really technical question – how do you do them? Do you paint a sheet and then cut out squares? I am sorry, this is super basic but I love what you did. And I’m delurking to say how much I like your site, how much I like what you say. You sound like a great person and the fact that you are an illustrator …. wow, I am in awe.
Hi Carlynn!
Each background is about 4×6 inches, so basically what I did was take a large sheet of the paper I work on (a german etching paper called Hahnemuhle paper) and pencil in the dimensions. Then I painted each background with acrylic and kind of went to town… first playing with the color, making sure they all complimented each other and then painting squares on some or stripes or whatever. So I’d get a good mix of patterns and solids. For a few of them, I scanned in a solid background and added pattern in photoshop (another painting that I overlaid on the computer). There are about 85 pages in the book, so I tried to give as much variety as possible… :)
Hope that helps!
As the owner of a completely shaved head, I must admit that I can’t relate to your dilema. You poor people with hair. I remember years ago freaking out when my hair started to thin. I couldn’t feel more pleased now. Roll the windows down baby cuz my skin head loves fresh air. Umbrella? Nah. I’ll just wipe off when I get in. Bedhead? Not my problem. As William Wallace shouted, “FREEDOM!”. Ooops, I got a little dramatic there. Anyway, I love your backgrounds. Aren’t they a blast to do? I can’t get enough. Also looking forward to the halloween thing.
i like how you express yourself so diffrently in each illustration you do. some illustrators are bound by style..i like the freedom you portray!
These are beautifully designed!! Wonderful!!
i lovee these!!!
Hello! I’m Jaume, from Barcelona, Spain. I draw some comic books and other things. I like very much your work. I just write to tell you that I’m using a background made by you in my “myspace”. You can see it now and please tell me if you don’t want that I use it because I will erase it right now. Please. :-)
Thank you very much.
